Cato-Meridian Jr. Drama brings the magic of Oz to the stage

The Cato-Meridian Jr. Drama Club transported audiences over the rainbow with its fall production of The Wizard of Oz, performed Nov. 7 and 8 in the newly renovated auditorium. Directed by Willow Eckel, with assistance from Kelsey Brazee, the production featured a talented cast of students who brought L. Frank Baum’s beloved story to life through humor, heart and imagination.
The show’s charm was matched by the enthusiasm of its young cast. “I have a lot of physical humor in my character. It’s one of my favorite parts of the show,” said Kyrie Baxter, who played Scarecrow.
Brigham DelloStritto, who played the Tinman, said his favorite part was “seeing the performance come together slowly. Everyone acting, getting their costumes, seeing the set around them — it looks great.”
Olive Kline, one of two actors portraying Dorothy, added, “All my friends are doing the play, it’s great having fun with them. It’s also great meeting new people and connecting with them.”
The production also featured magical pre-show appearances by Glinda and Dorothy, courtesy of Royal Promise Productions.
Behind the scenes, students and staff worked together to create colorful sets, detailed costumes and lively music under the direction of a dedicated production team. The Jr. Drama Club’s rendition of The Wizard of Oz reminded audiences that, just as Dorothy learned, there truly is no place like home.
